New beer launches in Bakewell

A new beer is about to see the first light of day as part of Hartingtons School of Food's first ever introduction to artisan beer brewing course in Bakewell on Saturday.

This course is aimed at the curious and those keen to find out how they can brew their own great tasting real ale in their own kitchen all from raw ingredients.

We will prove that you don't need expensive kit to make fantastic tasting real ale.

The tutor for the course Paul Taylor has made his own brew called Hartingtons New Ale especially for the course and will bring along some for the students to bottle at the end of the beer brewing course. The beer promises much. According to Paul this pale ale uses Maris Otter pale ale malt and has been bittered with UK Goldings hops and flavoured with US Cascade hops to give a refreshing pale ale that is perfect for spring and summer drinking. Can't wait to try it.

New birth in Bakewell

Hartingtons gave birth to its own mother culture last week. This sourdough starter culture can be used in our future artisan sourdough bread making courses.

We made our culture under the instruction of one of our bread making tutors David Neville who incidentally is off to work with Morrisons, starting this week to help them upgrade their already impressive range of artisan breads. Apparently, Morrisons are the only one of the big supermarkets that have retained genuine bread baking facilities within their stores.

To make you own starter culture all you need is flour, water and some grapes. Leave the culture exposed to the atmosphere and it will pick up the natural wild yeast spores, which then work symbiotically with bacteria to produce the unique sour taste. Each starter has a completely original composition. This made the birth of Hartingtons 'junior' a very special moment in Hartingtons short life.

We are doing a sourdough bread making course in May with Andrew Auld of the Loaf. By then young Hartingtons may even be old enough to play his part.

Artisan Italian Bread Making Course In Bakewell

The latest artisan bread making course took place at Hartingtons School of Food on Sunday.

This relaxed baking course took place in Bakewell in the Peak District with students learning all about the mystery of the biga. It was refreshing to hear our tutor David Neville's first rule was to discard the constraints of a standard bread baking recipe. It was all about feeling the dough!

The students produced a fantastic focaccia and a ciabatta as well as producing their own personalised pizza. In addition to this they also made their own delicious pumpkin soup. Lunch was a bowl of the soup together with freshly made olive and rosemary focaccia.

All the students left inspired by their artisan bread making course.......so if you too want to be inspired why not have a look at some of the forthcoming artisan bread making courses at Hartingtons in Bakewell in the coming weeks.

Cheese Making Course Launched

Hartingtons are pleased to announce our first artisan cheese making courses taking place in Bakewell in the heart of the Peak District.

We are delighted that these courses will be taken by Chris Ashby. She is one of the countries leading cheese making consultants and has recently been delivering the cheese making courses at Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's River Cottage.

The courses are very competitively priced at £130, proving you don't need loads of bread to be able to learn how to make cheese!

Our first cheese making course is on 29th May but if this date is not convenient please ask about future dates.

Well the first real snow of Winter has fallen in the Peak District. Everywhere has a covering and in some places much more!

Since starting Hartingtons in Bakewell at the beginning of 2012 we have had several couples come along to our cookery courses. What amazes me is how much fun they seem to have together. One couple didn't stop laughing during the whole cookery course. At the end of the course they genuinely remarked that it was one of the best things they had ever done. Praise indeed.

Well Valentines Day is fast approaching and if your loved one is a chocoholic then we have the ideal Valentines gift for them.

To celebrate Shrove Tuesday on 21st February Hartingtons will be holding a pancake masterclass under the expert guidance of chef Frank Boddy.

The course will not only show you how to make traditional pancakes and toss them correctly......but you will also learn how to make canape size blinis, flambe crepes suzette, perfect American style pancakes and also make a delicious savoury pancake supper dish.

The event promises to be a great deal of fun....and at the end of the day you will have a selection of your own pancake creations to take home and enjoy on Shrove Tuesday!

Hartingtons gets baking!

Yesterday was the first full day baking course at our new cookery school in Bakewell.

Eleven eager would be artisan bread bakers turned up to our converted saw mill in a sun bathed Bakewell full of anticipation and excitement on what a day of artisan baking with local food hero and master baker Andrew Auld might hold.

The day started in a very civilised & relaxed way at 9.30 with chat and merriment over coffee and croissants. Andrew then explained his baking journey from boyhood fascination to now being the owner and master baker of the Loaf in Crich. Then it was very quickly time for our students to get their sleeves rolled up and for them to get baking.

The baking began with the students mixing their white or wholemeal dough and it was non stop until the end of the day when they left with a bag full of their home baked bread. During the day the students baked an artisan white/wholemeal loaf, focaccia and something for those with a sweet tooth: chelsea buns, fruit loaf, apple or cinnamon rolls or fruit buns.

All in all a fantastic days bread baking in Bakewell. The second of Andrew's bread baking course in Bakewell is already sold out but we have just put on an additional bread course on the 29th of March and for those that want to take their artisan bread making skills to another level we have just added a sourdough bread making course on the 3rd of May.

Sourdough bread baking course

The popularity of artisan bread baking cannot be denied. One of the most resurgent areas of bread baking that has come about is that of sourdough. You can tell sourdough by the irregularity and relatively large size of the air pockets within the crumb of the loaf (see image ).

What is sourdough?

Sourdough bread baking uses a naturally occurring combination of bacteria and yeast which was first used as far back as ancient Egyptian times to leaven bread (make it rise). It was used exclusively until the middle ages but now has been replaced largely by cultured or 'bakers' yeast. Sourdough is particularly important in Rye bread making because rye does not contain enough gluten to make leavening with cultured yeast rise effectively.

The popularity of sourdough

Sourdough bread has become more available in recent years with the increasing popularity of artisan bread producers who champion the cause of real bread production and a return to more traditional styles of bread making.

Taste wise it has a more sour or tangy taste than cultured bread. I love it and it makes particularly brilliant toast.

If you are a fan of Italian Bread but have never got round to having a go at making it yourself then we have just the cookery course for you!!

Join us on Stage 1 of our World Bread Tour when the featured country is Italy. We suspect you all enjoy a bit of a lie in on Sunday morning.....so we've arranged a late start especially for you.

Join us at 11.00 a.m. and learn the techniques behind baking your own ciabatta, focaccia and pizza bases. You will be guided along by chef David Neville who is really passionate about home made bread and at one stage in his career was lucky enough to be taught by an artisan baker specialising in slow fermented breads of Northern Italy.

In addition to your bread making David will also show you how to make a typical Italian soup to have at lunchtime. There will be a further bread making session in the afternoon and all the fresh bread you make on the day will be yours to take home and enjoy.

Finishing around 3.00 p.m. the more energetic amongst you can rest assured that there will still be time to do all your usual Sunday chores...... like washing the car, cutting the lawn and taking Fido for a walk!

Two dates are available for Stage 1 of the World Bread Tour. If you fancy hopping on the "tour bus" we get underway on 12th February and again on 11th March. Both dates are proving popular so if you are interested be sure to book soon!

We have been bowled over by the popularity of our introduction to artisan bread making courses. The first two dates have already sold out. But don't fear.......we have just put an additional artisan bread making course on at the end of March. Places are selling fast so don't hesitate too long if you are interested.

Hartingtons is a member of the Real Bread Campaign and we are committed to teaching people how to make better tasting and healthier bread. First cookery courses - fantastic success!

Hartingtons first ever cookery courses held in our converted saw mill in Bakewell were a fantastic success if the size of the grins from the students were anything to go by.

Our first ever cookery course was a half day introduction to Cooking with Indian Spices. During the morning chef Frank Boddy tutored students on how to prepare a lamb rogan josh all from original herbs and spices (no pastes here). It was fantastic...and I'm not just saying that. The depth of flavours knocked spots off the rather homogenised curries that you get even from your favourite curry house (most of them buy in standard base sauces). All the students made their own Peshwari Naans again from raw materials and they all commented on the delicious pineapple chutney which went with their own spicy cauliflower fritters.

The following days cookery was a cookery course of World Flavours in One Pot. An eclectic mix of 6 dishes ranging from a sausage and lentil stew to a sweet potato curry. My particular favourite was the bread and butter pudding. Certainly not like anything my mother used to make! (sorry Mum).

Our first two cookery courses were a great deal of fun and hard work for all involved. It was a great learning experience for us in the cookery school and for the students. We are already looking forward to next week's sold out Introduction to artisan bread making course when 12 new students under the tutorship of Master Baker Andrew Auld look to acquire the basic skills of artisan bread making.

Brewing up a storm in Bakewell.

Many would say that Bakewell is best known for its baking and the world famous Bakewell Pudding........but this could all be about to change if new cookery school and artisan food events business Hartingtons has anything to do with it.

Bakewell has recently acquired brewing credibility following the relocation of award winning micro brewery Thornbridge Ales to the town. Now Hartingtons wants to teach the whole world how to brew fantastic tasting real ales and beer at home using 100% natural ingredients.

Hartingtons Artisan beer brewing course has been specially designed for all those who want to learn how to brew real ale in the natural traditional way.

Paul Taylor from Murphy and Son in Nottingham will demonstrate from first principles how to set up a 'brew' using basic domestic equipment and using 100% natural ingredients. He will also carry out a tutored beer tasting highlighting some well known and distinctive beers and what in the selection of their ingredients and the brewing process makes them taste so different. By doing this he will highlight how the brewer can change the mix to personalise their own brews to meet their individual taste. Paul will take people through the entire brewing process and the resulting brew will form the basis of Hartingtons first ever beer to be called Hartingtons Pheonix Ale.

The full day beer brewing course comes with beer brewing notes and a light lunch and at the end of the day attendees will have all the skills and knowledge to go home and start their own brew from scratch.

The course is proving to be incredibly popular with 5 spaces having been booked since the weekend.

We are running several bread making courses in 2012. On 26th January and 1st March we have full day courses taken by Andrew Auld, Head Baker and owner of the Loaf in Crich.

Andrew's introduction to Artisan Bread Baking will show you how to make three different doughs: A white or brown dough, Focaccia and a sweet dough. Andrew is very passionate about his craft and during the day you will learn lots of useful tips to improve your bread making at home.

If you fancy a weekend course we are also running two Sunday half day courses in February and March on Italian Bread Making as part of our series of "A Tour of World Breads". The courses are tutored by David Neville and you will learn how to make Ciabatta, Focaccia and a traditional Pizza base dough together with a typical Italian dish to accompany your bread......a must for all lovers of Mediterranean style food.

Festive end to the year at Baslow

The bells were chiming and holly and mistletoe was in abundance at the final Baslow Food Fair of 2011.

Despite the rain there was a steady stream of foodies looking for something different to tempt their taste buds.

They came and they bought.....

Thanks to all the artisan food businesses that have helped us put on the Baslow Food Fairs in 2011. A bit of cliche but we couldn't have done it without you. Equally, thanks to the people who came along and visited and supported the event.

We are now taking a bit of a break until April next year. But don't forget you can come to our new Cookery School in Bakewell. We are having an open event on the 17th December for the interested and curious to take a peek.

Are you thinking of visiting Chatsworth House this weekend? Well I would encourage you to do so!

Yesterday I was walking through the estate and the House looks particularly splendid at this time of year. It's so nice in early Winter to get wrapped up warm and set out from Baslow to walk alongside the River Derwent to Chatsworth House.

You go over the bridge at Nether End in Baslow and then immediately take a right turn in front of a row of very picturesque thatched cottages. Follow the path to the "Kissing Gate" which then takes you on to the Chatsworth Estate. The path leads alongside the river with wonderful vistas of Chatsworth all the way.

If you are coming to Chatsworth this weekend you might like to plan your trip for Sunday and combine your walk with a visit to our Christmas Food and Drink Fair in Baslow.

The event is the ninth in a series of incredibly popular Food Fairs which have been held during 2011 in Baslow Village Hall (next to the Cavendish Hotel and opposite Il Lupo restaurant on the main road through Baslow). Admission is FREE.

There are 20 stalls of artisan food and drink from in and around the Peak District, plenty of xmas gift ideas, a free prize draw and lots of complimentary tastings!!!..... as well as freshly made churros and hot chocolate for sale on the forecourt all day!!

Fantastic Reaction to Cookery School in Bakewell

Julie and I were simply stunned by the enthusiasm for our new cookery school in Bakewell this weekend.

We had a steady stream of curious and enthusiastic foodies coming through the door.

Everybody remarked "What a fabulous space" in response to our converted sawmill.

Having spent almost 9 months fitting it out it was nice to hear that other people appreciated the light, space and views afforded by our beautiful little 'foodie bolt hole' set on the banks of the River Wye.

The local MP Patrick McLoughlin made an appearance on Saturday in an informal capacity and both he and his wife seem keen to perhaps do a course in between their many engagements.

We have already had a flood of bookings with many people booking Christmas Presents for friends or family. How about buying a gift voucher?

Chris and I are always looking for the very best producers to come along to our Food Fairs in Baslow and what a line up we have got for you at the Christmas Food and Drink Fair on Sunday 4th December at Baslow Village Hall.

Tindalls of Tideswell, fresh from their tv appearance as part of the Village SOS programme, will return to Baslow with a cornucopia of seasonal treats.

Carol has promised to bring along home made Christmas Cakes, their own recipe Christmas Puddings, mincemeat, seasonal chutneys, their famous pork pies (that sell out at EVERY Food Fair....so get there early if you want some!), fidgety pasties, tidza puds and if that wasn't enough to tempt you they will also have a selection of small hampers which would make ideal Christmas Presents.

They bake all through the night to bring these fantastic products along to Baslow and are always one of the most popular stalls at every Fair.

Bakewell Tart & Tapas

Bakewell we know is world famous for it's Bakewell tart and Bakewell pudding.

We are all familiar with the story behind the origins of the Bakewell pudding. The cook at the White Horse Inn (now Rutland Arms) whose fortuitous mistake led to the creation of one of the worlds most famous desserts.

Hartingtons is happy to be based in a place like Bakewell with such a culinary heritage.

As well as acknowledging Bakewell's great food heritage Hartingtons is keen to push the boundaries of modern cooking.

One of the food events we are setting up in our cookery school in Bakewell is a gourmet supper club. This will involve some of the best and most exciting new chefs and cooks in and around the Peak District being able to showcase a tasting menu for one night only in a similar way that the Loft Project is doing in London. Accompanying the gourmet food will be a range of wines or drinks to compliment perfectly the chefs gourmet creations.

We had a fantastic meeting today in Bakewell at the Lime Lounge Coffee House on Bath Street with David Neville of El Toro in Sheffield. David has agreed not only to take a tapas course teaching students how to prepare some of the best authentic tapas dishes but also to put on a Spanish gourmet night including some dishes derived from the worlds best and most famous restaurant Elbulli.

We often make the joke between ourselves about Hartingtons being able to teach you how to 'Bake Well' in Bakewell. Ha Ha! Not funny I know, but neither is pastry making!

At our most recent food fair in Baslow when chatting to people about our new cookery school, a huge number of people expressed an interest in learning how to make pastry. It seems I'm not the only person who struggles with this mysterious art!

For this reason we are put on our 'Mastering Pastry'. This cookery course aims to provide you with the skills and confidence to make your own pastry as well as creating 5 stunning dishes and 5 different types of pastry.

We have just returned from another fantastic Food Fair in Baslow. Yet again a number of our artisan food stallholders completely sold out including Heavenlies and Halls Home Produce.

Thanks to all the stallholders who were there today and a big thank you to the hundreds of people that came along and sampled, bought and supported the artisan food producers that work and live in and around the Peak District.

We were also overwhelmed by the interest shown in our new cookery school in Bakewell. So many foodies are interested in our cookery courses and coming along to Hartingtons Open Weekend on the 26th and 27th of November that we are bit worried about fitting everybody in! Seriously though....if you are in Bakewell for the Christmas Weekend then please pop in and say 'hello' and meet one of our star chefs, Frank Boddy, who will be preparing a range of canapes during the two day event for you to sample and enjoy.

Chatsworth House is holding it's spectacular bonfire night celebration on the 5th November. It promises to be a great show. For those that have tickets.... enjoy! Sadly if you haven't it's too late as the event is sold out.........but don't despair!

Why not come along on the following day to Hartingtons Food Fair and Bonfire celebration in Baslow. You can still go for a walk in the magnificent grounds of Chatsworth House. The Peak District is one of the most beautiful parts of the country. In my opinion; the most beautiful.

Bakewell, for those that don't know the Peak District that well, is a beautiful market town nestling in a small valley with the stunning River Wye running through it. Bakewell has a great weekly market and one of the most popular farmers markets in the country running on the last Saturday of the month. Increasingly Bakewell is becoming a mecca for foodies across the country, with the availability of superb locally sourced food suppliers such as the world famous Chatsworth House Estate. Bakewell is also the home of culinary classics such as the famous Bakewell Pudding and more recently Thornbridge Brewery, one of the countries great new breed of micro breweries producing a selection of award winning real ales.

Bakewell, in the Peak District, will soon be welcoming another addition to it's fine food and culinary heritage. Hartingtons cookery school and food event business will be opening it's doors in 2012 and welcoming visitors to take part in a range of inspiring and innovative food courses and food related events.

International food overated!

Julie & I have just returned from a week in Sicily. We stopped in a small town near Palermo and had a great time.

As you would expect we spent time visiting the historic sights in the grand old town of Palermo. One thing, however, that we both commented on was how disappointing the Italian food was. This led on to a discussion about the quality and variety of food now available in the UK. It was very telling that we both felt that we have had better cappuccinos recently in both Bakewell and Sheffield.

For years the UK has had a reputation for being in the culinary wilderness. Now with a whole new breed of artisan food producers I would say that the range and quality of food available would challenge that available anywhere in the world. There were a couple of exceptions. The local Caponata we had a starter for our Sunday lunch was fantastic and a seafood risotto made by a local fisherman was simply outstanding!

We are both passionate about the local food producers who come to our regular food fairs in Baslow. Our cookery school in Bakewell is opening very soon and we will be putting on a range of courses to inspire people to get involved in artisan food production, perhaps setting up your own business to produce great tasting artisan food. We are almost ready to release the full details and dates of our forthcoming courses on our new website so keep checking this blog for details of when we go live! We've already signed up some great visiting chefs and two fantastic artisan bread makers and we are currently working on a food blogging and writing course.

With just over a week to go to Hartingtons' Autumn Food Fair and 'Taste of Asia' we can announce the list of exceptional artisan food businesses attending our latest Food Fair.

There will be something for everybody at our October Food Fair in Baslow nr Chatsworth on the 9th October.

For those who enjoy slightly more exotic flavours we will exhibit a range of stalls giving you a little 'Taste of Asia'. This includes Edo Sushi, a new start up business from Sheffield, who will bring a range of Sushi and Japanese flavours for you to sample.

For those who have a sweet tooth; Lorna from Heavenlies is doing cakes and desserts based on a Bollywood them. I for one can't wait............ and if you fancy something authentic to drink with it; Teabox from Sheffield will be featuring a range of Asian teas such as Chai and Green Tea.

'Foodies' who like their flavours to be a little bit more traditional won't be disappointed. Tindalls from Tideswell; who recently featured on TV as part of Taste Tideswell will be bringing some of their classic and award winning favourites. A tip though.........make sure you get their sausage rolls and pork pies early...they always sell out.
For those who like vegetarian food we have our first ever specialist vegetarian stall in the shape of Rob Lindop from the Parsnipship. Some great flavours from him!

Heavenly Cheesecake Company will bring along their fantastic New York style cheesecakes whilst those with a weakness for cup cakes won't be able to keep away from Muffin Topps stall of irresistible flavours.
We also have The English Rose Cake Company who will be exhibiting wedding and celebration cakes whilst chocoholics need to taste Boutique Aromatique's fantastic artisan chocolate all the way from the Welbeck Estate.

We have been overwhelmed by the response to our Artisan Food Fairs in Baslow this year. From a standing start back in April the remaining 3 Food Fairs of 2011 are already fully booked with artisan food producers keen to exhibit their wares.

Demand from stallholders has been absolutely phenomenal and although we have only just released the dates for 2012 all the Fairs for next year are already nearly full.

Remaining Fairs for 2011 at Baslow Village Hall are:

The image shows Steve stood behind the central demonstration isle where some exciting and exceptional chefs, cooks and artisan food producers will in a few short weeks be holding court to a throng of eager foodies.

Exciting news …….the fit out of our brand new Cookery School and Food Events HQ in Bakewell is now well under way. We have a few events planned before Christmas with a full programme of cookery courses, demos and food related events starting in January 2012.

Bakewell Cookery School - Work starts

Despite a bit of a 'cock up' by the company contracted to deliver the kitchen and appliances for our new Cookery School .....we finally have the fridge freezers, ovens, induction hobs and tens of carcasses on site this week.

Steve and Gareth have started the job of putting the units together in Bakewell and it's all looking good for the Cookery School to be ready by the middle of October.

The great thing is that everybody who comes to the building loves the space; the open beams, the views over Bakewell's livestock market and in the opposite direction into Bakewell itself with the Church sitting prettily on the hill.

Here's a view of our cookery school premises BEFORE work started. It will be interesting to see how different it looks after we have finished.

So what about doing a course in Bakewell before Christmas? Perhaps an 'alternative' works do?

We will be putting a small number of events and courses on before the end of the year. Some of the ideas we have are: an introduction to bread making with a local artisan baker, a sausage making course, how to make sushi, beer tasting and a 'posh pie and pea supper' or maybe the ultimate afternoon tea!

A Food Fair for Foodies

Hartingtons latest Baslow Fair was a roaring success but above all great fun.

Streams of knowledgeable foodies perused, tasted and chatted with our enthusiastic line up of artisan food producers.

Baslow newbies to the show all made a great contribution:

Shelly Preston from Boutique Aromotique on the Welbeck Estate wowed visitors with her artisan chocolates. I heard many eulogise about her dark chocolate truffles.

Mr Hall brought along his traditional potted meats and pates along with his home made mushy peas and bacon together with his home cured packs of salted beef. Delicious and not expensive at £1.50 a pack.

Gary from the Pumpkin Oil company treated people to a taste of his Eastern European delicacy. Nutty and healthy.

Kate from the Coleiac Safe Ltd exhibited her range of gluten free cakes proving that gluten intolerance shouldn't prevent you from indulging.

Tea Box of Sheffield brought some great loose tea blends fresh from their box. How about Rhubarb and Custard. Fruity and Cream in a tea cup.

As well as these first timers we had some great regulars:

Lorna from Heavenlies doing her themed afternoon tea on the lawn. Lorna's gran even made it along to give her moral support. Apparently, Lorna was inspired to bake by her gran and having a sprightly 99 year old there to give her some encouragement helped her sell to her ever increasing band of followers.

Mary Button of the Really Good Cheese Company introduced a crowd of cheese lovers to unique and original local cheeses. How about a Staffordshire with beer and garlic and have you ever tried Dovedale Blue?

Greenside Deli had their best show since starting their new artisan food business just over a year ago. Fantastic and well done.

Luigi from Taste of Italy with his genuine Italian bread. They are imported from Altamura, Puglia. Alongside are his genuine Italian salami and cheese.

Glynne of Splash & Dash provided some great laughs and some fantastic marinades and oils.

Ced and Linda brought a taste of the West Country with their Friary Liqueurs. Fruity flavours with a kick and classic French wine flowed with Genevieve's Beaujolais wine from her family vineyard.

Lee Capille entertained outside providing fresh coffee and paella with the genuine soccarat. The crust that is so treasured by real paella connoisseurs.

Muffin Tops yet again proved that there are cupcakes and cupcakes. These are in a class of their own. The flavours are intense. No bland sponge here topped with fancy icing. Blueberry cupcakes with real fruit all the way through the sponge. Simply brilliant!

Thanks to everybody that came and made it a great day. We now have a few weeks off to refine the next one. A Taste of Asia which will be just a little special.

Only two days to go now to our next Food Fair at Baslow near Chatsworth! .........And what a line up we have got!!

If you are in the Peak District on Sunday 28 August over the Bank Holiday weekend and are looking for something to do ; perhaps wanting to combine an event with a bit of a stroll then look no further!

Our Food Fair at Baslow Village Hall is literally 200 metres from the pedestrian entrance to Chatsworth. Why not have a little stroll through the magnificent parkland of Chatsworth or a guided tour of Chatsworth House itself followed by a visit to Hartingtons Baslow Food Fair.

If you are near Baslow at lunch time pop along and tuck in to some hot food. Charismatic Lee Capille will be serving his home made chicken and chorizo paella together with a vegetarian pasta on the forecourt all day. His food went down a treat at the last Food Fair........very reasonably priced and definitely not to be missed!!

Indoors Lorna of Heavenlies will be serving tea and coffee complemented by her amazing array of home baked goodies and for the chocoholics amongst you we have Boutique Aromatique with her 12 hour steeped hot chocolate!! Mmmmm....delicious.

It's no secret. I'm a bit of a chocoholic. I love real dark chocolate not the sweet stuff that we are brought up on in this country. Imagine my joy when we were contacted by a true artisan chocolatier wanting to come to our Bank Holiday Food Fair in Baslow on the 28th August.

Shelly Preston is a fine chocolatier with a boutique next to the Welbeck Farm Shop on the Welbeck Estate. I've posted a picture of some of her creations. Even better she is going to do 12 hour hot chocolate at our Baslow Food Fair nr Chatsworth. So chocoholics you know where to come on the 28th August. See you in the queue!

What a great show and it certainly was a show. Much more that just a Food Fair......... It was a carnival of Mediterranean Food.

Thanks to everybody who came along and all the great artisan food producers.

For anybody who loves a traditional market Bakewell surely has one of the best. It's held every Monday and the town hums and throbs with visitors, tourists and locals all eager for a bargain.

Bakewell, for those who have not been before, is a very attractive market town nestling in the heart of the Peak District and a stone's throw from Chatsworth House. It's a beautiful place to wander around and enjoy the boutique shops and cafes.

Soon it will have an exciting new addition. Bakewell will be getting it's own cookery school located in a converted saw mill on Coombs Road right near the heart of the town where Bakewell Market takes place. Hartingtons as well as putting on food fairs in Baslow is also setting up a food hub and cookery school in the beautiful Peak District market town of Bakewell.

The cookery school is located in a stunning converted saw mill next to the River Wye and close to the spectacular Bakewell livestock market.

The Mediterranean comes to Baslow on 7th August!

The next Hartingtons Food Fair at Baslow Village Hall on Sunday 7th August brings a holiday flavour to the Peaks.

If you've opted for the staycation this Summer.....you need look no further than Baslow to give you a taste of the Mediterranean.

In August a select band of stalls selling Mediterranean inspired food will join a host of local producers turning Baslow into a Mediterranean culinary hotspot for the day!

Highlights include:

Luigi from a Taste of Italy with his unique Italian cheese, pasta, ham, salami, olives and ciabatta. Serpil from a Taste of Anatolia will showcase her own Turkish family recipes. Real Italian Cafe culture will be brought to the event by Foreman and Johnstone who will be serving superb barista made Lavazza coffee from their cute converted Fiat van and Lorna from Heavenlies will be injecting more Mediterranean flavour with her roasted red pepper tarts and orange and almond cake.

Local producers laying on the "Best of British" include: Heavenly Cheesecake Company, Tindalls, Raw Appetite, Really Good Cheese Company, Patisserie Lola, Fruit and Herb Company, English Rose Cake Company and Greenside Deli.

What a show!

Well Julie and I have been basking in a feeling of success.

What a great food fair in Baslow nr Chatsworth on Sunday! The sun shone, the crowds of foodies came streaming out into the Peak District and the stallholders put on a spectacular show for all the visitors.

Highlights were too numerous to mention; but some of mine were: Simon and Damian from Liberty Foods launching their great new range of Pork Pie Flavours. In fact I'm having a piece of their whole grain mustard version tonight for my tea.

Becky from the English Rose Cake Company made an impressive debut selling out her range of cake pops and brownies.

Mary Button of the Really Good Cheese Company informed and delighted lovers of local cheeses.

Glynne's cheeriness and oil and marinades filled the room with a fresh and uplifting aroma.

Andrew from the Loaf once again brought a great selection of bread made in true artisan fashion.

Kathryn from Raw Appetite proved to many people that good food doesn't have to be boiled, fried or microwaved first and the Chilli Man's taste test got everyone talking.

Tindalls of Tideswell proved once again that traditional doesn't mean boring!

Stephanie of Bake's cakes were a fruity sensation and the Caudwells Mill team brought a lovely air of sophistication and old world charm.

And.....special thanks to Ben of BZ Magic who despite being 'mugged' early on in the week and having a late night on Saturday made it all the way to Baslow to demonstate his close quarter magic skills.

We are already looking forward to our next Baslow Food Fair on the 7th August.

This time it's flavours of the Mediterranean as well as some of the traditional favourites.

I can't wait.

If you are visiting Chesterfield this Sunday .......why not make a little detour and spend some time in Baslow?

This lovely Peak District village is less than 15 minutes drive from the centre of Chesterfield and is at the gateway to the wonderful Chatsworth Estate.

Are you planning a trip to Chatsworth House this weekend?

If so I don't blame you. Chatsworth is looking magnificent at the moment in the Summer Sunshine and it's always so pleasant to walk along the River Derwent towards the House.

If you do go to Chatsworth I would urge you to take a look at the picturesque village of Baslow next door. Hartingtons Food Fairs are all about contrast.

We like to put on a bit of a show because we know that's what you want. Something different. Not just another bland farmers market which can be worthy, predictable but ultimately not that interesting.

So we bring to you the contrast of hot and raw food at our next Baslow Food Fair on the 10th July.

Artisan bread lovers will be in their element in Baslow on the 10th July.

Not only have we the wonderful Andrew from the Loaf bringing along his life enhancing sourdough bread. Freshly baked on the day. Even though it's Sunday Andrew will have been up since the wee small hours baking; so make sure you come along and get your fresh bread for the week.

For those foodies that want to bake for themselves. Cauldwell Mill from Rowsley will be coming along for the first time to Baslow nr Chatsworth with a selection of freshly milled flour and details on how they produce their artisan ingredients with just a little carbon neutral wind power.

Post modern Pork Pies

The humble pork pie!!!! It's a great British Classic and perfect at this time of year to go with a picnic or salad.

Can it be improved on? Well pork pie isn't for everybody so Totley based Liberty Foods has put a post modern spin on the pork pie with exciting new flavours such as:

Pork & Stilton
Garlic, black olives and parsley
Chilli, coriander & mango chutney

These flavours are lighter and fit better with the modern more discerning palate.

The launch of the new range of pork pies takes place at the Baslow Food Fair on the 10th of July.

We are pleased to announce that Benoit of BZ magic will be making a welcome return to our Baslow Food Fair nr Chatsworth on July 10th.

He will be appearing mid morning as if by magic & will dazzle and amaze you with not only his gallic charm but also his sleight of hand. Really, it is quite amazing.

Then he will disappear mid afternoon back to Sheffield. Not by magic, but by bus unless anybody is available to give him a lift?!

Hartingtons Baslow Food Fairs have only been going since April but we are already getting a following and grabbing the headlines despite our grammar!

As well as featuring regularly in the Sheffield Telegraph, Sheffield Star, Derbyshire Times, Peak Advertiser, Totley Independent and the esteemed Baslow Parish Newsletter we have just found out that we are getting featured in the latest edition of the Go Out Magazine produced by East Midlands Trains.

So it's full steam ahead on the marketing front!

Saturday surprise of food delights

Julie and I stopped off at Sheffield's Banner Cross Fair today just to have a mooch.

Much to our delight we found some really interesting local food producers that we are hoping will come along to our next Baslow Food Fair.

This included Gary from the Pumpkin Seed Oil company. Apparently pumpkin oil is big in central Europe in countries such as Slovenia and Austria. We tried it. It's beautiful. Very nutty and ideal over salads and I think it would be great for a stir fry or even added in to bread for those that bake their own.

Other finds were the Riverford Organic who deliver organic veg and fruit baskets and Feel-Good Cakes who produce a range of nutritional cakes from natural ingredients. Other interesting potential stallholders were an Indian Food stall and Little Italy providing hot authentic pasta dishes and risottos.

We are genuinely hoping that some of them will be able to make our next food fair in Baslow on 10th July 2011 and hope you too will be able to come along.

I love cheese.

I can't see why you wouldn't? Salty, sweet, increasingly spicy artisan cheese. The variety is endless and we have a great cheese stall coming to our next Food Fair in Baslow on the 10th July.

The Really Good Cheese company is well named but it under describes it's vast range and Mary's expertise on the subject of cheese.

Baslow Food Fair - from strength to strength!

Hartingtons Baslow Food Fair just goes from strength to strength. At only the third event of the nine planned this year the numbers of foodies eager to try and taste the array of food was overwhelming and they were all given a real treat.

Highlights for me were the valiant attempts by various visitors to cook up a perfect curry under the able tutorship of Jas Rayatt from Red Hot Cuisine. There were some serious chilli infused vapours filling the hall but it all just added to the colour and spectacle of the event!

Lorna from Heavenlies eagerly satisfied the cravings of those with a sweet tooth putting on a delightful range of cakes, brownies, tarts and cream teas for those getting into the pre - Wimbledon spirit.

Andrew Auld of The Loaf brought along an incredible range of freshly baked loaves the like of which you wouldn't get in even the largest of supermarkets. I've just had some of his sourdough bread for lunch and I have to say it was absolutely delicious.

Those people who like a tipple were well catered for with Beaujolais from Derbyshire based Genevieve's family vineyard in Burgundy, beer from Leek Brewery and Luigi from Taste of Italy brought along a fine selection of Italian wines and beer.

Glynne from the Herb and Fruit Company was his usual genial self and sold buckets of his infused oils and vinaigrettes . My favourite was the strawberry and mint and at £1.99 a bottle it was an absolute bargain!

The Hartingtons roadshow rolls on and we are already putting together our next Food Fair in Baslow .....on 10th July.

One thing we do know is that with your help it will be even bigger and better.

Baslow Food Fair - attracts The Loaf

Anybody who has tried to bake their own bread knows how difficult it can be sometimes to get it right.

Real artisan bakers like The Loaf from Crich and now with a new cafe in Matlock have made a come back in recent years. One of their specialities is their sourdough bread.

The Loaf are coming along to our next food fair in Baslow nr Chatsworth on the 19th June so if you are looking for some tasty fresh bread for the week and haven't got time to prepare your own why not pop along.

They will also be bringing along a selection of tasty items from their deli counter including the world famous red pepper jelly from Delishas which is guaranteed to sell out if previous experience is anything to go by so don't be late.

With less than a week to go to our next Baslow Food Fair it's all hotting up!

Could it be the thought of Jas of Red Hot Cuisine cooking up his Indian spices and demonstrating how you cook authentic Indian recipes in a healthy way. It might be Lorna at Heavenlies exotically tasty chocolate brownies flavoured with ginger or chilli. What about Sue Carline from the Leek Brewery and Staffordshire Cheese company and their range of artisan cheeses including their famous Hartington cheese with pieces of chilli to give it a bit of a kick?

So if you are a loose end on Father's Day or you just want to experience some different food and have a great free day out........ I can recommend that you go go go and hot foot it down to Baslow this Sunday.

Well if you come to our next food fair on the 19th June you will be treated to THE red hot cuisine.

This company set up to bring authentically tasty and spicy Indian food without necessarily all the calories.

Jas will be conducting a number of cookery demonstrations at our event to show Indian Food Lovers just how they can create the authentic flavours and taste and still feel that they are eating healthily.

Julie and I have just got back from our New York and Iceland trip. A bit of a contrast in every way.

We were both looking forward to trying out some of the exciting food on offer. To be honest we were a little disappointed in both places. Admittedly we were trying to eat out 'on a budget' but even so the trip just reinforced our view that actually the UK now rivals most places when it comes to general eating out, local food producers and certainly variety of food.

The highlights of the food tour were probably a warm lobster salad in Reykjavik and some gorgeous Lebanese food in New York. The lowlight was definitely the vegetarian Sushi in Greenwich Village. What is it about the American food psyche that if they give you four times as much of tasteless bland food then that's OK? I have never seen sushi the size of a Swiss roll before. Do they not get it that the whole idea is that sushi is small, delicate pieces to be eaten as bite size parcels.

The one thing we can promise is that the artisan local food producers coming to our next Food Fair on the 19th June won't be bland. Already we have proper sushi, honey, heavenly New York cheesecakes, flavoured oils and dressings, pies and flans, Italian deli and wines, preserves, bread, cupcakes and biscuits, local cheeses and beer.

Already looking forward to seeing you at our Food Fair at Baslow Village Hall (nr Chatsworth House) on the 19th June.

Sushi coming to our Baslow Food Fair

The fantastic array of artisan food producers coming to our latest food fair in Baslow on the 19th June is slowly coming together.

For those who love sushi we have a new stallholder Hiroko from Japanese Ideas who will be bringing not only sushi but other authentic home cooked Japanese food from her own kitchen. I've only tasted Japanese food a couple of times apart from Sushi and both time loved it. Fantastic gyoza or teriyaki or even wasabi peas or soya beans cooked with salt so simple and tasty. So I'm particularly looking forward to sampling some more of this fascinating type of cuisine.

For those who are interested in creating their own Japanese style dishes Hiroko also runs her own cookery school in Nottingham putting on various courses on how to prepare your own Sushi.

Fennel eating parrots & other foodie stories

There is no such thing stranger than reality & this weekend & the second ever food fair in Baslow was definitely living proof of that.

A game of two halves. A disappointing Saturday with a number of stallholder dropping out at the last minute and rubbish weather after a series of bank holidays and the hottest April on record made attendance disappointing. Sunday was completely different in every way. The best line up of stallholders ever! A packed, knowledgeable and curious crowd of foodies browsed, tasted, chatted with over 20 enthusiastic stallholders all keen to advise and inform the visitors about their artisan food products.

The highlight has to be with the revelation of one customer who brought a fennel plant from Phil Betts at Hardwick Country Store was that the plant wasn't to help create an authentic italian risotto or a spectacular fish dish. No...it was for their pet parrot who had apparently developed a Fennel addiction.

A brilliant Sunday, a great event and some top notch stallholders means that we are already looking forward to our next food fair in June.
