Christmas comes to Baslow

Anybody who likes to taste 'exceedingly good cakes' wants to come along to our fantastic Christmas Food Fair in Baslow on the 4th December.

How about this for a festive selection from the wonderful Lorna of Heavenlies....definitely NOT Mr Kipling!

"Christmas cakes, mini gingerbread house cookies, lots of seasonal tastes like fresh ginger & spice cake, pecan fudge cake, chocolate chestnut cupcakes and a surprise centrepiece! Angels, stars, glitter and flickering (LED!) candle light will set the mood. We'll also be serving mince pies (I'm hoping they might even be warm!) and cream with our teas and coffees."

Wow! Sounds simply heavenly what do you think?

Chris and I are always looking for the very best producers to come along to our Food Fairs in Baslow and what a line up we have got for you at the Christmas Food and Drink Fair on Sunday 4th December at Baslow Village Hall.

Tindalls of Tideswell, fresh from their tv appearance as part of the Village SOS programme, will return to Baslow with a cornucopia of seasonal treats.

Carol has promised to bring along home made Christmas Cakes, their own recipe Christmas Puddings, mincemeat, seasonal chutneys, their famous pork pies (that sell out at EVERY Food Fair....so get there early if you want some!), fidgety pasties, tidza puds and if that wasn't enough to tempt you they will also have a selection of small hampers which would make ideal Christmas Presents.

They bake all through the night to bring these fantastic products along to Baslow and are always one of the most popular stalls at every Fair.

Joining Tindalls will be over 20 other artisan food producers from in and around the Peaks. Churros and hot chocolate will be available all day on the forecourt and Dawsons Yard will have a wide range of Christmas Wreaths, Planters and gift ideas.

Chatsworth Food Fair

This weekend was supposed to be a relaxing one after our first ever food fair in Baslow (nr Chatsworth).  But you know what it's like!  We wanted to get to Chatsworth's Food Fair to have a look round and have a chat to a few possible stall holders for our next food fair taking place on the 7th & 8th of May.

What should have been a gentle saunter up to Chatsworth House along the River Derwent became a full blooded sprint across the grounds in order for us to reach the Food Fair before it closed at 5.  To be honest we were a little disappointed.  There were a lot of hot food outlets doing pies and gourmet burgers but no food producers from the Peak District.  Instead there were a lot of journey men food producers who do the round of food markets throughout the UK.  That's not to say that some weren't very good but it would have been nice to see a few more local faces!

Anyway, today is a day to celebrate.  We are just off to sign the lease on our cookery school.  A fantastic spot on the first floor of a converted saw mill in Bakewell overlooking the River Wye.

Food & Art at our Baslow Food Fair nr Chatsworth

Where does food meet art?

Well some would argue that cake decoration is an art form and looking at Kirstie Dobsons fantastic creations at Hartingtons Spring Food Fair last week who could argue with that.

Crowds of people were gathering round her stall of beautifully decorated cakes including a full size Radley handbag.  I thought somebody had left it on her stall by mistake it was that real!

I understand that Kirstie is open to commissions so if you are looking for a one off cake for that special occassion that stands out from the crowd why not get in touch with Kirstie on 07733 070279 or e-mail her at pkdobson@sky.com.

SO SORRY but the Baslow Food Fair nr Chatsworth is OFF!

With massive regret Hartingtons have had to concede defeat to the unprecedented weather conditions in the Peak District. I can't tell you personally how deeply upsetting this is. Julie and I have had one of the most stressful weeks of our life as we have hoped against hope that the weather would eventually improve; but alas it hasn't.

Late last night after taking advice from respected local sources; it appears that the main car park in Baslow is under several feet of snow and is effectively closed. More worrying is the fact that the local routes from Sheffield have not been cleared and are icy and extremely dangerous. We do not feel that we can ask our exhibitors to put their lives at risk to put on our food event nor do we want to encourage members of the public to do the same.

A fantastic success

We know that the first Christmas Food Fair in Baslow would have been a marvellous event for Baslow and a great way for our local food heroes to exhibit the fantastic food produced in and around the Peak District. The event in the short time we have been promoting it has got coverage in the Sheffield Telegraph, Derbyshire Times and the Peak Advertiser. Not only that but through our internet campaigns anybody searching in Google for Chatsworth House or Baslow would have come across the details of Hartingtons Baslow Food Fair. We know from the level of enquiries we were getting that our food event would have received thousands of visitors and have been a massive success.

Thank you all so much!

All it remains for me to say is thank you to every one of the exhibitors who have supported us in putting together this food fair. We hope that we will see you at some of the ten food fairs we are putting on next year in Baslow which we can guarantee will be bigger and better than our cancelled Christmas Food Fair. Have a look at the dates for our 2011 food fairs. I would also like to extend special thanks to Jayne and Baslow Hall who have been unceasing in their efforts to enable us to put together this event.

I hope you all have a great Christmas and I really do hope that you can come along to our Baslow Food Fairs next year. We still won't be able to guarantee the weather; but we can guarantee that there will be some of the most amazing food heroes on show!
